The Hangeul Nuri Foundation (hereinafter referred to as 'Hangeul Nuri') starts a video content contest for 'Using Hangeul Together with the World'. By providing an opportunity for transcribing various world languages in Hangeul, the foundation aims to lay the foundation for utilizing Hangeul as one of the world's common writing systems.

This contest, which runs for three months from June 1st to August 31st, focuses on three categories: writing song lyrics, writing stories, and reciting and translating the preface to the Hunmin Jeongum. This contest is open to all foreigners who know Hangeul. First, in the writing song lyrics category, the target is the song "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Participants should transcribe the pronunciation of the song's native language in Hangeul and create a video of themselves singing the song. In the writing stories category, the target is the fable of "The North Wind and the Sun." The process is similar, but participants should submit a video of themselves telling the story instead of singing.  Lastly, the "Teacher Challenge" category is for Korean speakers who are able to read and translate the preface of Hunmin jeongeum. Teachers can participate by reading the preface to the Hunmin jeongeum in Korean of the 15th century, translating the preface into their native language and rewriting it in Hangeul and then creating a video of themselves reading the preamble in Korean with their native language pronunciation.

Foreigners who wish to participate can find detailed information about the contest and video production methods at Hangul Nuri's website (hangeul-festa.org). Video submissions can be shared by providing the video link in the "Submit" section of the website until August 31st. Winners will be announced on the website on October 9, Hangeul Day, and a total of $31,000 in prizes will be awarded to 99 winners, including a $5,000 grand prize and the Hangeul Society Chairman's Award.

Established in 2022, Hangul Nuri has conducted specialized research on linguistic theories of writing systems and practical research on foreign language writing system based on Hangeul. It was established to promote and share the spirit and principles of Hunmin jeongeum with the Korean people and people around the world. Through its subsidiary, the Hangul Nuri Institute  various research activities are carried out, including "linguistic research on Hunmin jeongeum and modern Hangeul", "research on foreign language transcription based on Hangeul" and "preservation of language diversity through Hangeul."

This contest was prepared with the intention of demonstrating the practicality of "foreign language transcription based on Hangeul" and the idea of "writing all languages in Hangeul." By simple calculation based on the number of consonants and vowels, the Hangeul Nuri Institute estimates that the current Hangeul writing system can be used to write the pronunciation of 132 languages, about 29% of the world's 451 major languages. It is also estimated that 56% of the world's 254 languages might be written by using the ancient Hunmin jeongeum, which has more letters and diverse letter combinations than current Hangeul system. That's more than half of the world's languages. As the Korean Wave has increased global interest in Korean culture, the contest is expected to be an unprecedented attempt to transcribe native languages into Hangeul from a foreigner's perspective.

Kim Juwon, director of the Hangeul Nuri Institute and honorary professor at Seoul National University, stated: "Through this contest, I hope to explore new possibilities for Hangeul with people around the world and share our proud cultural heritage of Hunmin jeongeum as a global public asset." Kyungdong Navien is sponsoring Hangeul Nuri to help expand the use of Hangeul.
